When medical historians look back on 20th-century healthcare, they’ll note the remarkable pace of discovery and the rapid adoption of new technologies. Innovations such as advanced imaging, minimally invasive surgery, transcatheter heart valves, artificial joints, genomics and precision medicine have had a profound influence on patient care and have changed clinical care forever.
While these technologies have yielded many benefits, there have also been valid concerns about overuse, overreliance and escalating costs. These justifiable concerns notwithstanding, when thoughtfully applied, these new technologies and new therapies have had an undeniably positive impact on patient outcomes.
